THREE IMAGINARY BOYS AND A NEUROTYPICAL GIRL

Using Crazytalk Animator allowed me to turn the two pages of script into a prototype that would soon become the final animation. In fact, the title was only meant to be the working title based on two of my favourite bands (“Three Imaginary Boys” is the debut album by The Cure and The Slits released their single “Typical Girls”). At the end of the animation we discover that the “neurotypical” girl is actually autistic (“neurodiverse”). So when the expert asks us who we think is autistic we are never sure and that was deliberate to highlight the condition having a whole spectrum of traits and different ways of how it presents or expresses in any individual.

Autism is a condition that affects 1 in 68 people but diagnosis has largely been male based. Women or girls mask the symptoms or mimic behaviour that reduces the chance of diagnosis. They are also more likely to be diagnosed with OCD, ADHD, BPD or an eating disorder rather than receiving a correct diagnosis of Autism. [Diagnosis Rate from Scientific American]
